Thursday, March 4th, 2010

Drupal is free, open-source content management software. It is powerful CMS script with lots of features including user managenent (permission system), content managent with custom content types, RSS feeds, internationalization/localization in many languages, modules – extensions system, theme system (with widget support) and many others. It is licensed under GNU General Public License that gives much freedom to developers. Drupal have gained popularity in recent years (fact is that many corporate and government sites use drupal (whitehouse.gov)), and become among top 5 most used CMS. The official package can be download at drupal.org, and it is called the drupal core. Drupal core have the core modules and components needed to create simple website, blog or online community. It can be run on any web server (Apache httpd for example) with PHP language and MySQL database support. Some special PHP settings like register_globals must be turned off in order drupal to be installed. It is somewhat difficult for first time user to maintain drupal web site, but once it get used to it is much easier. Hosting acounts at the following hosts: Hostgator, Bluehost, Hostmonster, IXwebhosting, Webhostingpad, Dreamhost, Justhost are perfectly setup so you can run drupal without any problems. They also support custom PHP.ini for register_globals option and have one-click installers that will help you install drupal without need of download/uploading script, setting databases and files.

Shared Web Hosting

Tuesday, March 2nd, 2010

From all web hosting services, shared hosting is the cheapest and the most popular  hosting service. Shared web hosting allows many users to share single server. It is the simplest way for you to have a website for few dollars monthly. Today many hosting providers offer many features on single shared hosting account (PHP , MySQL databases including Remote MySQL, FTP accounts, add domains, Perl, Rails etc), control panel to make it simpler to you to manage files (File Manager), setup databases (add new users, create databases),  create FTP accounts (setup quotas and permissions), check server status, install web scripts (wordpress blogs, joomla cms, drupal, galleries). Most popular control panels in the shared hosting industry are: cPanel, Hsphere, DirectAdmin, Plesk and others. For operating system linux is the choice for shared hosting, though windows shared hosting is offered but is more expensive because of Windows OS licenses. In general, the client does not perform server configuration, install updates or other administration tasks, as this is done by the hosting company’s staff. So if you want to create a website or blog this is the choice for you.

MySQL Web Hosting

Sunday, February 28th, 2010

MySQL is the most popular relational database management system, that is free and open-source. Uses SQL (Structured Query Language) for selecting, updating, inserting  data into database. It is very popular in the web hosting industry, and almost every host supports MySQL. It’s popularity is because it is free, it is powerful and fast, open-source and many web applications including: wordpress, drupal, joomla, wikimedia (the wikipedia software), galleries, and many others use it to to store website data and settings. It runs on several platforms including Linux and Windows, and it often comes in bundle with PHP, Apache web server (httpd) and Linux operating system – the LAMP stack. Though most of the hosts offer MySQL as part of their big list of features, there are some hosts that offer only specialize MySQL hosting. Todays web hosting providers allow unlimited databases and unlimited sites on one account. Databases and database users are usually managed via control panel (cPanel, Hsphere, directadmin and others), and/or via phpmyadmin (PHP application for managing MySQL via the world wide web). If your site processes much MySQL data, a separate dedicated MYSQL database server may be configured to reduced the overhead of the current server which can be used for serving web pages. This is supported by popular hosts like : HostGator, Ixwebhosting, Dreamhost, Lunarpages and others.

PHP Web Hosting

Friday, February 26th, 2010

PHP (HyperText Preprocessor) is the most popular web programming language. It was created by Rasmus Lerdorf in 1995, have gained popularity after its parser have been rewritten in 1998. Since then large community of users have been developing and testing PHP. It is a lot simpler and easy to create a dynamic website in PHP than with its competitors Perl, Ruby on Rails, ASP (Active Server Pages), and probably that is why it is more popular. PHP as a programming language offers many features to developers, and since PHP 5 a greater support for object-oriented programming.

What is important for PHP host?

The important thing about a web hosting company is to always have the latest PHP version. But PHP alone with not be much of use to. MySQL have to be available if you want to install a web application like WordPress, Drupal or Joomla. Some hosts even allow custom PHP.ini Settings (some scripts require some PHP settings to be turned on/off or configured), .htaccess support for pretty urls (SEO?), and some like Hostgator even allow custom module installation (you will need to ask the support staff). So a good PHP hosting provider is the one who offers PHP, MySQL and a cPanel (for web hosting management) and a linux hosting environment. Nowadays many hosts offer this kind of setup. Here are some popular ones: HostGator, Bluehost, HostMonster, Webhostingpad, Ixwebhosting, Justhost and Lunarpages.

VPS Virtual Private Server Hosting

Thursday, February 25th, 2010

Virtual private server are between shared hosting and dedicated servers. VPS exists in the virtual space of a dedicated server, sharing resources with other virtual servers. Resources (CPU, RAM, disk space) are split up and managed by a software. Sometimes is better to buy a VPS rather than dedicated server. All benefits dedicated servers have also VPS have, except that VPS gives you less resources. So if you have a website that does not have ultra high traffic, or you provide a web service that does not use much processing you should go with VPS. It is much cheaper than dedicated server. However to properly manage VPS you will need to have advanced Linux or Windows administrative knowledge. Usually host provides, give you full root access to your VPS server. Full root access give you the ability to do almost anything inside your virtual machine. You can install specific software like ffmpeg or DNS software for domain name management, or anything you like. You can even configure it, and sell shared hosting, but if you up to for reselling you should probably get a reseller account first before you move t your own server. Some hosts even offer managed vps hosting, with which they manage many aspects of your account, including updating software, configuring webservers, configuring firewall and other. With unmenaged VPS you are left on your own, to update your software and configure it. Popular VPS hosts are HostGator, Dreamhost and IXWebHosting.

Reseller Web Hosting

Tuesday, February 23rd, 2010

If you are planning to start a web hosting company then this type of hosting is the best to begin with. Reseller hosting is type of web hosting where the reseller resells other hosting company shared hosting space, hardware and bandwidth. The hosting plans features can be configured/created via the admin panel of the reseller, who purchases disc space and bandwidth from a third party company. Many web designers and web development companies have reseller accounts and sell hosting under their brand to their clients.  Knowledge beyond web hosting management and control panels is not required to maintain this type of account. There are several popular control panels for reseller hosting management. WebHostManager (WHM for short) and cPanel (for linux) are the most popular combination of reseller admin panel and user/client/customer web panel. Via WHM you can create/configure hosting plans, setup bandwidth quota, disc space, edit/add dns zones, setup branding, assign IP addresses and many other features. Clients via cPanel may add addon domains, upload files, setup FTP accounts, create/manage MySQL databases and MySQL users, etc, etc. Other popular panels are plesk (for windows), directadmin and others.

Joomla Open-source Software Hosting

Sunday, February 21st, 2010

Joomla is free open-source content management software (CMS) script for creating websites online. It is  built with PHP (web programming language) and uses database system like MySQL for storing settings and data. It have large community of users, testers and developers. Standard features included are: content management – text/multimedia, caching, RSS feeds, internationalization (many languages available), polls, blogs and many others. Supports extension system where developers can contribute and add new features to the standard Joomla distribution version. There are over 4000 plugins available in the official plugin directory. There are many modules categories including: galleries, e-commerce, news, ads, communication, hosting, multimedia and others. Check the plugin directory here. Template system is also supported where webmaster can easily switch templates and  change the layout of the entire site. Many free professional templates are available for Joomla. Together with Drupal they are the most popular content management systems, because you can create almost any type of website with them whether it would be news site, personal website/blog, complex corporate website, social site or other. Specific web hosting for Joomla is not required because the requirements are web server with PHP and MySQL  installed, and if you need SEO urls the web server (Apache httpd is supported) .htaccess have to be enabled. Today many (almost all) hosts have the LAMP (Linux Apache MySQL PHP) stack setup on their servers so to run Joomla it would not be a problem. Some hosts allow custom PHP.ini so you can further customize specific PHP settings for some modules.

Types of Web Hosting

Saturday, February 20th, 2010

There are several types of web hosting: shared, virtual private servers, reseller, dedicated, cloud, colocation hosting, and all of them are based on dividing resources or combining. For example shared hosting is a type of hosting where many accounts/websites are placed on single server where all of them share resources. This hosting is the cheapest. Reseller hosting is reselling shared hosting. Often large hosting companies offer reseller hosting to users (usually web designers or companies) to resell their hosting under their brand. Virtual private servers are usually little more expensive than reseller hosting, but they offer full control over so called virtual private servers. These servers virtually exists on dedicated servers, and are limited in terms of CPU, RAM memory and disk space. Mostly are used for high traffic websites or web services. As your site gets popular more resources are needed. Dedicated server give you all the resources (CPU processing, RAM memory, disk space) only to you and they are not shared with anyone else. If you site becomes ultra popular and receives many visitors daily and one dedicated server would not be enough, cloud hosting is the solution. Cloud hosting is combining many servers to work as one thus increasing server capacity and an combining resources to handle high traffic. There is one more type of hosting I know and it is colocation. Colocation is renting a real space in datacenter where you can place your own server. You will probably never gonna need anything more than shared hosting offers. It is the best choice for personal websites/blogs.
